The experience and expense of driving to US Fencing Competition My family drove to Philadelphia, US last weekend for two days US regional foil competition. My son joined Cadet and Junior men foil (Y16 and Y20) group. My daughter joined Y12 and Y14 women foil group. US fencing competition is much more competitive than Canada’s. Children have much more pressure and better to their growth, if you believe hardship can help children growth better. The competition was hold on Saturday and Sunday. We left home on Friday and return on Monday. Some parents may drive on Sunday night and return to Toronto at midnight. Here is the list of approximate expense for the four people’s whole travel. If you never go to US Fencing, it may be a good reference for you. 1. Competition fee (four group competitions) USD $300. 2. Driving gas fee: USD $250, 1600 km 3. Highway Toll fee: USD $30 4. Food: USD $400 5. Hotel: USD $500 (3 nights) Total is about USD $1500.

This level is for club based programs and local competitions, with limited/restricted access to provincial/national competitions. 2. The explanation of Canadian children's fencing process (Part 2) TRAING Zhan Zhang Part 1 introduced the official message of Canada and Ontario Fencing organization. Fencing training and school learning Canada: If a child can enter the Canadian national team, he may be exempt from high school sports education credits and may enter various Canadian university fencing teams. Special Recruitment for Sports: If you are recruited into a university fencing team, your child's academic performance will have a great advantage over ordinary children in the admissions. Help for admission: If the fencing score is not enough, you can't be recruited into the university fencing team. The child's years of fencing experience can still help the admission application a lot. America: If the child gets good scores in American national competitions or international competitions. May enter various American university fencing teams. The specific university requirements are different. The general requirements are: In the US national rankings, among people of the same age, enter the top ten, or the top eight in the US national competition, and the top 16 in the world competition. Special Recruitment for Sports: If you are recruited into a university fencing team, your child's academic performance will have a great advantage over ordinary children in the admissions. Help for admission: If the fencing score is not enough and you are not recruited into the university fencing team, your many years of fencing experience can still help you apply for admission a lot. In the past, some children in HuaHua Club passed US Ivy university recruitment or helped to enroll in the university. Typical story: One girl had been training in HuaHua Club since she was ten years old and had participated in many competitions. She trained very seriously, had good skills. However, her competition feeling, and status was not very good, the result of the game is not ideal. After she was sixteen, her major energy shifted to academic studies. She was admitted to more than ten Ivy League universities (Harvard, Massachusetts, Yale and other top universities). Yale University wrote a special comment about her fencing in her acceptance letter, to the effect that her past fencing career has become a very important part of her excellence. Whether it is sports special recruitment or help to enroll in school, children insist on fencing from an early age to high school. Their experience, achievement, various gains, and life perceptions will all become a high-lighted section in university applications. Personal choice Generally, children in Canada participating in fencing can be divided into three categories: leisure, just for exercise. (Recreational Level) Competition, like to take competitions, want to compete for rankings. (Competitive Level) Goal for national players, players who have participated in the national team selection or have entered the national team. (HPP Level) Specific to each child, parents and students need to consider various actual situations, their own time and energy, financial conditions, and their children's training and competition performance, etc., to find out the position of fencing in their mind and choose one of the above three types. Training plan After parents and students understand their own situation and own choices, they consult the club and choose the appropriate training plan. According to the official settings of the Canadian Fencing Association, and the requirements of parents and students and their personal circumstances, the club provides three training programs for members: leisure member, Entry Level program Competitive members, Intermediate Level program National players, Advanced Level program At present, the membership fees and group class fees for the above three types are the same, but the training plans of the members and the courses they take may be different. Some courses can only be attended by intermediate or advanced students. The club has no requirements for entry level members but has training and competition requirements for intermediate and senior members. For entry level members, clubs, parents and students, similar to business service and customers, business service provides services, including venues, training, and teaching services. Customers purchase club services. For intermediate and senior members, clubs, parents and students, they are more like collaborators. They have much higher requirements for the trust and tacit understanding of both. Close communication and joint efforts are required to help children achieve good results in the competition. Schematic diagram of the distribution of fencing students Coach teaching After parents and students have a clear fencing attitude, they choose a coach that suits them. The Huahua Club foil coach is introduced as follows: Ko Jin, Head Coach, a senior coach, is mainly responsible for HPP senior students and some outstanding intermediate students. Coach Kim (Kim Yong Hi), an intermediate coach, is mainly responsible for middle and junior students. David Chen-Li and Edward Li, junior coaches, are mainly responsible for junior students. Senior coaches are mainly responsible for various advanced combined action techniques, game strategies and tactics, such as timing, distance, how to observe and analyze opponents, and so on. Elementary and junior coaches are mainly responsible for basic skills, basic tactics, and movement training. Coach Kim, David Chen-Li and Edward Li all are the students of Coach Ko. Their technical style and teaching philosophy come from the same system. As the head coach, Coach Ko will communicate with other coaches and even supervise them to ensure the quality of their teaching. In this way, when coach Ko takes over the students of other coaches, a smooth transition can be made. As a parent, what I personally observe is: Because each coach has limited time and energy, he can only teach the students what he thinks is the most important content. Senior coaches don’t spend a lot of time and energy to figure out the details and basic skills of students’ movements, but intermediate and junior coaches can take time and energy to correct the students' movement details and basic skills. For a specific student, it is not that the more advanced the coach, the better result, the most important thing is to suit yourself. For example, my daughter used to have two classes a week with Coach Ko. After Coach Kim taught, I took the initiative to change Coach Ko’s class to Coach Kim’s class because Coach Kim’s lessons are more suitable for her and children can absorb it more easily. The essence of the problem is: Is it appropriate for a senior coach to teach a student with zero foundation? Under what circumstances? When is it not possible? The operating style and characteristics of Huahua Fencing Club The club’s management style features are formed around the head coach’s teaching philosophy and teaching style. It has been two years since Coach Ko took over the Huahua Club. The style and characteristics of the club have gradually become the focus of the competition: Inspire children to love fencing, encourage students to love competitions, and strive to win the competition. After the formation of this style, the teaching atmosphere will focus on this goal, and teaching resources will lean towards this goal. Teaching resources, including the level of the coach, the time and energy of the coach, the classification of large classes, the priority of private class schedule time, etc., for example, senior coach often lead students to play competition. During this period, students who do not go to the game will not be able to attend his private class and the group class he presided over. The students went to the competition with him, were able to get his guidance on the scene of the competition and continue to learn from him. As a matter of course, the priority level for members to receive teaching is formed: Senior student > Intermediate student > Beginner student One-year membership fee student > Semi-year membership fee student > Monthly fee student Correspondingly, class fee: Senior Coach > Intermediate Coach > Beginner Coach Membership fee discount: One-year membership fee student > Semi-year membership fee student > Monthly fee student To ensure fairness, club management and coaches use the extra time and energy to ensure the teaching of students of other levels as much as possible while ensuring the above priorities. The Levels of students in HuaHua Fencing Club Group A professional, semi-professional To participate in the Canadian HPP project (HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM) Group B competition Like to play fencing competitions Group C Leisure Fencing is for leisure and physical exercise, not for competition Group D children Children under eight years old. Full explanation: When grading, the club coach should comprehensively consider the situation of the students, and the most core standards are listed in the simple explanation. The following is the complete explanation: Group A 1. HPP students, participated in the Canadian HPP (HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM) 2. The explanation of Canadian children's fencing process (Part 1) Fencing system Zhan Zhang Fencing is a sport of minority, and many people don't understand it. My child entered HuaHua Fencing Club at the age of six and took interest classes. It has been almost ten years. Accompanying my child to fencing gave me a direct and detailed understanding of my child’s fencing growth experience from the age of six to eighteen. Write this article to help parents and students get a general understanding of fencing as soon as possible. Membership In Canada, every fencing club needs to register with the provincial fencing association and accept the sanction. Provincial Fencing Association is under the sanction of the Canadian Fencing Federation. Members of each club must register with the provincial fencing association, become a member of the association, purchase a membership card, and obtain a membership number, which is valid from the beginning of August to the end of July of the following year. Becoming a member of the Provincial Fencing Association, you automatically become a member of the Canadian National Fencing Association. The fee for the membership of the Provincial Association already includes the fee for the National Fencing Association. For example, the HuaHua Fencing Club is under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Fencing Association, and the Ontario Fencing Association is under the jurisdiction of the Canadian Fencing Association. Every member of the HuaHua Club must become a member of the Ontario Fencing Association and get a valid Provincial Fencing Association membership number. Membership classification Each child's condition and family situation are different, and each parent and student's understanding and goals of fencing are also different. In response to the different needs of everyone, the Ontario Fencing Association provides three types of memberships: 1. RECREATIONAL $35.00 [INCLUDES CFF LICENSE $22.50] Recreational membership, the fee is $35.00, including the National Fencing Association fee of $22.5 After the member purchases this membership: You can train normally in the club and participate in some small local competitions. Have five million accident insurance. This level is for club based programs and local competitions, with limited/restricted access to provincial/national competitions. Covers insurance ($5,000,000 third person liability (Quote from the website of the Ontario Fencing Association) Warning Every member of the HuaHua Club must purchase a membership of the Ontario Fencing Association and obtain a membership number, otherwise the club may terminate the training of the member. Purchase Ontario membership website: https://fencingontario.ca/about-the-ofa/membership-information/ If you don’t know anything about fencing, you want to take a step, then watch a step, and learn more details after participating. If the child is still young (generally, six to ten years old), just want to give it a try. If you just want to exercise by fencing, for leisure and entertainment. Those who meet the above conditions are recommended to purchase this level of membership. In fact, more than half of the club members belong to this category. 2. U15 COMPETITIVE $42.50 [INCLUDES CFF LICENSE $22.50] Competitive members (under 15 years old), the fee is $42.50, including the National Fencing Association fee of $22.5 Purchase this certificate: You have all rights of a recreational member, and can also participate in all Canadian and American competitions. (If you want to participate in the American competition, you also need to purchase the membership of the American Fencing Association) Your competition scores can enter the Canadian national ranking list under the age of fifteen, see the picture below: URL: http://fencing.ca/hpp-selection-rankings/ This level is for the serious athlete who is competing for ranking points and training to achieve excellence in the sport for athletes Under the age of 15. Entry into all competitions held in Canada and USA (Quote from the website of the Ontario Fencing Association) If the child is under 15 years old, likes fencing, likes competition, is not afraid of competition pressure, and desires victory, you can purchase this level of membership. 3. COMPETITIVE $80.00 [INCLUDES CFF LICENSE $22.50] Competitive member (adult level), the fee is $80, including the National Fencing Association fee of $22.5 Have all rights of a recreational member, and can also participate in all Canadian and American competitions (if you want to participate in American competitions, you also need to purchase a membership card of the American Fencing Association) Representing Canada and participating in international competitions (maybe a membership of the International Fencing Federation is required) Your score can enter the rankings of all levels in Canada: Senior, Junior, and Cadet (under 17 years old) It is possible to get financial aid from the province or the country. This level is for the serious athlete who is competing for ranking points and training to achieve excellence in the sport. Eligible for inclusion in the National Rankings Entry into all competitions held in Canada and USA International competitions. (May need additional FIE license for some Levels) Eligible for funding (eg. Quest for Gold) (From the website of the Ontario Fencing Association) After the child reaches the age of thirteen or fourteen and wants to enter the national team of various age groups in Canada (Senior, Junior, Cadet), to participate in international competitions, you need to purchase this level of membership. 4. High Performance Program $550.00-$650.00 (HPP) Training program for high-level athletes To participate in this program, you must first purchase a Competitive License. Anyone who wants to enter the Canadian national team at all levels must take this program first. This program is updated once a year. It will give the requirements for entering the Canadian national team. The requirements may be different each year. Take this year as an example: Participate in the national team training Camp in October. Participate in the Canadian National Championship in December. Participate in the North American Cup (NAC) in October, December, and next January. Finally, according to the performance of the players in the above training and competitions, the points of the players are calculated and announced in the form of rankings. Three people with the highest points represent the Canada and participate in certain international competitions, or the nine people with the highest points represent the Canada and participate in certain international competitions.

https://youtu.be/BuSRmQGFKWA
